March Madness 2019: Three takeaways from No. 1 Virginia’s thrilling OT win over No. 3 Purdue

first_imgAnd it’s not like the Cavaliers were ignoring Edwards, either, as several of his long-range bombs were tightly contested.C-Boogie came ready to play in the #Elite8.The @BoilerBall star has 16pts & 4 threes at the half! #MarchMadness pic.twitter.com/IkVNqSIyD3— NCAA March Madness (@marchmadness) March 31, 2019Edwards is only a junior, but he entertained thoughts of declaring for the draft in 2018 before deciding to return. He’s been projected as a second-round pick, but given his prolific, almost supernatural touch in this tournament — and especially this game — there’s speculation he might have worked his way into the first round if he declares for the 2019 draft. In today’s NBA, there’s no shortage of need for a quick guy who can drain 3s, and Edwards delivered the goods against a great defensive team Saturday.Unfortunately, the Boilermakers (26-10) provided Edwards little help on the offensive end. No other player scored more than seven points. The shot sends the Cavaliers to the Final Four, where they will face the winner of Sunday’s Auburn-Kentucky matchup next Saturday in Minneapolis. It’s Virginia’s second trip to the Final Four, but first since 1984.Here are three takeaways from the Cavaliers’ narrow escape against Purdue.Mamadi Diakite’s shot will live forever in Cavaliers’ historyVirginia’s 6-9 junior forward Mamadi Diakite had put together a quietly effective night for the first 39:59 of regulation Then he made one of the biggest plays in Cavaliers’ history, hitting a short jumper at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. Credit freshman guard Kihei Clark with chasing down the loose ball with seconds ticking down and then firing off a great half-court pass to Diakite.WE’RE HEADING TO OT! 😱#MarchMADNESS | #Elite8 pic.twitter.com/pmX7SHt35Z— NCAA March Madness (@marchmadness) March 31, 2019Diakite had a great overall game, scoring 14, grabbing eight rebounds and blocking four shots. But no matter what happens in the rest of Diakite’s time at UVA, his clutch shot against Purdue will be remembered for many years to come.Kyle Guy gave Cavs fans a scare, but returned on fireWhen two-time ACC first-team star Kyle Guy turned his ankle late in the first half, Cavs fans everywhere held their breath. But after getting taped up on the bench, Guy returned for the final few seconds of the half. And in the second half, he made a huge statement early, hitting two 3-pointers in the first two minutes to put the Cavaliers ahead for the first time.First lead of the game for @UVAMensHoops! 👌#MarchMadness | #Elite8 pic.twitter.com/M9ylmoNSH6— NCAA March Madness (@marchmadness) March 31, 2019Guy had struggled in Virginia’s first three tournament games, hitting only eight of his 38 3 attempts and averaging 7.3 points per game. But he found his stroke just in time Saturday. He finished with 25 points, hitting 5-of-12 3-pointers. Ty Jerome also lit it up from outside, hitting four 3s and ending with 24 points.”We’re just so happy. We’ve worked so hard for this,” Guy told CBS Sports afterward.Carsen Edwards’ NBA Draft stock is going up … up … upEdwards had averaged 27.3 points in the Boilermakers’ first three NCAA Tournament games, and it was asking a lot for him to match that output.Instead, the 6-1 guard shattered that baseline, scoring 42 points, the most in an NCAA Tournament game since Syracuse’s Gerry McNamara scored 43 in 2004. He hit 10-of-19 3s and hit 14 of 25 shots overall. Edwards finishes the tournament with 28 3-pointers in four games, breaking the tourney mark of 27 set by Michigan sharpshooter Glen Rice in 1989 (and Rice needed six games to set that standard).Oh, he became the first player with four straight 25-point games in the NCAA Tournament since Stephen Curry had five straight for Davidson in 2007-08. Purdue All-American Carsen Edwards had a game for the ages Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as the No. 1 seed Virginia Cavaliers beat the No. 3 Boilermakers 80-75, in overtime in the South Regional final. The Cavaliers (33-3) got big nights from several players, but they’d be sitting in Charlottesville next weekend watching the Final Four on TV if not for an incredible shot by forward Mamadi Diakite at the buzzer in regulation that sent the game into overtime.last_img read more
