first_imgCristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have a rivalry that pushes the other to make footballing history.As Ronaldo and Messi sat side by side at the UEFA player of the year awards ceremony, they were pictured in cordia conversation.There was Virgil van Dijk sat to Ronaldo’s left, appearing perhaps a little anxious after all it was his first time on the big awards stage.Since the inception of the award back in the 2010/11 season, over half the winners come from either Messi or Ronaldo. There has never been a top-three shortlist that has not contained at least one of the pair.This is two men of football, who between them have dominated the stage of this sport for the last ten years.Last season was the first time in almost 10 years that the pair had not squared off against one another in some shape or form on the football field.El Classico was not only a battle between Barcelona and Real Madrid anymore, it wasa battel of the two greatest footballers on the planet.But Ronaldo had decided to venture on to somewhere new.
