Chess Federation Plans for Algeria Competition

first_imgFlashback: a chess tournament in MonroviaThe Liberia Chess Federation (LCF) has recently participated in the West Africa 4-4 individual chess tournament in Monrovia with three of its players emerging winners, next to Nigeria and the Ivory Coast.Giving details of the competition and other happenings in the federation recently in Monrovia, the president of the LCF, Mr. Winston Ireland, said if they should stand tall among other nations, the game needs the support of those who love it.“It was an amazing experience under my leadership when we invited our colleagues in the sub-region to compete for something through our game,” Mr. Ireland said.M. Balogun Oluwafemi and Kigigha Borno of Nigeria came first and second in the West Africa Zone 4-4 Individual Chess Championship held from April 20-30 this year while Harmon Barcon and John Jallah (Liberia) emerged as third and fourth place winners. The LCF meanwhile announced that its team will travel to Algeria in July to participate in the African Chess Confederation Championship and it is seeking financial support from well-meaning Liberians.“We used to receive the sum of US$20,000 from our government but we are no longer receiving it due to some administrative reasons cited by the Ministry of Youth and Sports,” Ireland said. The LCF boss who was elected on January 6 with Omar Issa, Jerome Wilson, Lewellyn Brent and Godfrey Richard as his vice president, financial secretary, treasurer and chaplain respectively, said the Federation presently lacks office space due to their inability to pay rent.“We inherited an empty office and as such we have been unable to raise funds to pay rent and settle other problems,” he noted. He said his leadership has registered 11 active chess teams across Montserrado and is planning to launch the game in schools and communities for children as young as 6 years. When contacted, the Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of Youth & Sports, Henry Nyonton, said the LCF was audited a year ago and discovered some flaws which the federation needed to have settled before it could be reconsidered for budgetary allotment.“There were some financial problems at that office and we have advised that the Federation puts its house in order by having an organized structure that will be willing to be accountable and transparent,” Nyonton said in a telephone interview.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Unfortunate BCCI is yet to implement reforms: Justice R.M. Lodha

first_imgOn a day when the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) is scheduled to meet and discuss the next course of action on the reforms proposed by him, Justice R.M. Lodha said it was “unfortunate” that even after almost one year since the verdict, the recommendations could not be implemented.”I am sad and it’s unfortunate. CoA was appointed about six months back. There was sufficient time to implement the order. It’s not a happy moment and it’s quite unpleasant,” Lodha said on Saturday. On January 30 this year, the Supreme Court had appointed a four-member committee headed by former comptroller and auditor general Vinod Rai to administer the day to day affairs of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), as an interim measure to oversee the implementation of the Lodha recommendations. The apex court, in the same month, had also removed president Anurag Thakur and BCCI Secretary Ajay Shirke from their posts for obstructing the implementation of the reforms. The Supreme Court passed a July 18, 2016 judgment to implement the Lodha committee recommendations.”It is unfortunate because on July 18, 2016 Supreme Court passed the order after hearing BCCI at length. Now after almost one year, when the president and secretary have been removed by the Supreme Court, we are nowhere near the implementation of the judgment of the Supreme Court,” Lodha said.In the BCCI’s last Special General Meeting (SGM), the state associations failed to adopt the Lodha Committee recommendations despite it being on top of their agenda.advertisementIt has reportedly left the CoA with no option but to ask the Supreme Court to enforce the reforms.A number of member units of the BCCI have filed affidavits in the Supreme Court against the implementation of the Lodha Committee recommendations. To this, the CoA had suggested the state bodies filter their objections to the recommendations to a few points and submit them to the court for reconsideration. This, the CoA had reiterated at its meeting with the state associations on the eve of the SGM, would be beneficial to all parties concerned. But instead, a seven-member committee, headed by Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman Rajiv Shukla, was formed “to identify the few critical points in respect of the said judgment (July 18, 2016 Supreme Court order) for the General Body of the BCCI to consider before its submission to the Hon’ble Supreme Court”.Asked about the few principal recommendations including the ‘one state, one vote’, age and tenure cap for administrators’, cooling off periods between successive terms and the size of the senior national selection committee which the state bodies have objected to, Lodha said:”All these things have been argued before the Supreme Court multiple times. They have been rejected. Supreme Court has put seal of approval. There can’t be more superior forum that SC. All these points had been rejected before the SC when they had argued. What is the point of saying all these now?”While speaking to a news channel, the 67-year-old former Chief Justice of India did not want to comment on one of the CoA members, Ramachandra Guha resigning recently, saying his explosive letter speaks for itself.”He must have found some internal functioning not satisfactory, I can’t comment on that. Guha has spelt out the reasons for resignation in his letter and that speaks for itself.”The next Supreme Court hearing on this matter is scheduled for July 14.last_img read more

first_imgWatford boss Gracia pleased with ‘focus’ for Woking FA Cup winby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveWatford did just enough to see off FA Cup opponents Woking on Sunday.Watford captain Troy Deeney came off the substitutes’ bench to wrap up their FA Cup third-round win over non-league Woking. The Premier League outfit made hard work of seeing off their hosts, Will Hughes giving them a first-half lead before Deeney was introduced late on to secure a 2-0 victory in Surrey.Hornets boss Javi Gracia said: “Before coming we knew it would be a demanding game instead of just the difference being the levels of the teams, but the players started playing very focused, knowing what they had to do.”We scored early and we had the control. We knew, while it was only one goal, we needed to kill the game, we didn’t do it until the second half but it was a good performance.” He added: “We have a good squad. The players that played today didn’t play the last games and I know all of them are ready and, like they showed today, they are available and ready to compete.”The result is not as important. It’s more important for me to see my players in a good condition and with a good attitude today.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more
