Watford boss Gracia pleased with ‘focus’ for Woking FA Cup winby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveWatford did just enough to see off FA Cup opponents Woking on Sunday.Watford captain Troy Deeney came off the substitutes’ bench to wrap up their FA Cup third-round win over non-league Woking. The Premier League outfit made hard work of seeing off their hosts, Will Hughes giving them a first-half lead before Deeney was introduced late on to secure a 2-0 victory in Surrey.Hornets boss Javi Gracia said: “Before coming we knew it would be a demanding game instead of just the difference being the levels of the teams, but the players started playing very focused, knowing what they had to do.”We scored early and we had the control. We knew, while it was only one goal, we needed to kill the game, we didn’t do it until the second half but it was a good performance.” He added: “We have a good squad. The players that played today didn’t play the last games and I know all of them are ready and, like they showed today, they are available and ready to compete.”The result is not as important. It’s more important for me to see my players in a good condition and with a good attitude today.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say

trevor cooney out of boundsSyracuse survived Gonzaga Friday night, but it wasn’t without controversy. The Orange, which rallied to overcome a five-point deficit late, almost lost in heartbreaking fashion. A phantom out-of-bounds call was at the center of the storm.Gonzaga, trailing 61-60, had a chance to take the lead with 20 seconds to play, but an errant pass from Josh Perkins wound up in the hands of SU’s Trevor Cooney. SOUTH BEND, IN – SEPTEMBER 30: A Notre Dame Fighting Irish cheerleader performs during a game against the Miami (Oh) Redhawks at Notre Dame Stadium on Seotember 30, 2017 in South Bend, Indiana. Notre Dame defeated Miami (OH) 52-17. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)This week, there has been a lot of noise made about the future of a possible ACC Network, which has been long discussed as a possibility for the league with ESPN. In a column on Campus Rush, Sports Illustrated‘s Pete Thamel called the network “imminent.” FOX Sports 1’s Tim Brando, who also calls ACC basketball games for Raycom Sports, doesn’t quite believe that we’ll see an ACC Network all that soon, but he does think it is coming, and the lynchpin to a launch is Notre Dame joining as a full conference member. That, he believes, will happen.Brando previously discussed Notre Dame’s role in the eventuality of the ACC Network on Twitter, and cleared things up a bit on “The Audible” podcast with Bruce Feldman and Stewart Mandel. Notre Dame/ACC talk starts around the 18-minute mark.On the ACC Network:“I do believe it’s going to happen, and I believe it’s going to happen when Notre Dame understands that it’s in their financial best interest to be in a conference, because they cannot command the same dollar from NBC or any other network by simply having seven home games televised. If you look at the revenues generated by both the Big Ten, the SEC, and the ACC without a network, as a conference member full time, they would, not only right now but certainly in the future, do much better than they are doing with their current arrangement. And I think that’s where we sit.”Brando says that if Notre Dame joins a conference in the next 10 years, the ACC is the only option:“No, Notre Dame cannot have a wandering eye. They not only signed a grant of rights with the ACC, but they signed an additional contract, which mandates that if they do become a conference member in football, there is no other place they can do that other than the Atlantic Coast Conference. And that’s through the year 2025. So (ACC commissioner) John Swofford and his people did a remarkable job when they brought Notre Dame in, to secure that when the Irish blue bloods decided ‘you know what, maybe it’s time to join a conference,’ they need to do that.”Perhaps most surprisingly, he predicts that this will unfold in the next three years.“I really believe that as we move forward, it’s a little early to be thinking about starting a linear network now, given the economics… It may not be the time in a year or two years, but in three years I believe you’ll be looking right down the pipe at an ACC Network, and I think the reason will be Notre Dame elected to become a full-time member.”The ACC is often viewed as the weakest of the Power 5 conferences, although with the Big 12’s issues, and the recent success of Clemson and Florida State, as well as a slew of strong hires this year, the league appears to be on solid ground. If it does, in fact, bring Notre Dame into the fold as a full member, it would be a massive coup for Swofford and company.[FOX Sports]

Match Preview The Cardiff City Stadium will be a site of tribute to Emiliano Sala on Saturday, following the disappearance of the club’s record signing when he took a private jet to fly over to Wales from France early last week.Although debris has been found, nothing more has yet been turned up.Sala’s former club, Nantes, paid an emotional tribute to the Argentine on Wednesday as they drew 1-1 with Saint-Etienne, and now it is the Bluebirds’ turn to pay homage.Following the narrow loss to Arsenal, manager Neil Warnock explained how proud he was of the performance his team produced.“We talked about Emiliano before the game and I thought it was appropriate that we gave a good account of ourselves against a good side and I thought we could’ve won the game,” Warnock told BBC Sport.“What a performance! If Arsenal had our chances, they would’ve beaten us by four. Nineteen shots at the Emirates, it’s definitely our best performance of the season.”Centre-back Sol Bamba, though, explained how the drama has impacted the squad. “It is a very unusual situation, a big tragedy. We have all been affected by it, the lads, the city, the whole club,” he told BBC Sport Wales.”We have had some help. We travel by plane and some of the lads have been thinking: ‘I don’t want to go on it anymore.’”A home game may, therefore, prove a slightly easier occasion to handle, but the bottom line for City is that they need the points: they find themselves four points adrift in the relegation zone. Bournemouth, meanwhile, have few such problems after back-to-back home wins over West Ham and Chelsea. Their stunning second-half display at Dean Court will be the standard that Eddie Howe seeks, but the context of this match means that it will be difficult for either team to truly have their minds focused on the game. Match Preview With their hopes of reaching the final of the Premier League Asia Trophy sunk at the first hurdle, both Newcastle United and West Ham will be looking to restore their pride when the pair meet in a third-place curtain-raiser in Shanghai this weekend.Taking to the pitch just before Wolves and Manchester City, the Magpies and the Hammers will look to end their stay in the Far East on a high note before heading back to Europe for final preparations. For the former in particular, however, their clash with Manuel Pellegrini’s side represents the first chance for new manager Steve Bruce to catch his squad in action. The former Sunderland supremo was tempted to Tyneside from his perch at Sheffield Wednesday and now faces the unenviable task of preserving their top-flight status after the exit of Rafa Benitez following off-field troubles at St James’ Park with the club’s hierarchy.Speaking to the media following his appointment, Bruce noted that he will likely not please every fan at the club but that he is “quietly confident” he can succeed in the role.“I know in some people’s eyes I’m not Rafa,” he stated. “I understand there are big shoes to fill, but I’ll give it everything I possibly can.“I knew it was going to be difficult. The easy thing would have been to say no. I just hope that people will show respect, which obviously you only gain by getting a few results and doing the job, but hopefully that will go hand in hand.“I accept I am not everyone’s cup of tea, but judge me over a period of time. I am quietly confident I will do okay.“I’m going to need all of my 20 years’ experience to get my way through choppy waters. But I’ve got skin as think as an elephant.”West Ham, meanwhile, have seen little turmoil during the off-season and have broken the club’s transfer record to bring Sebastien Haller to London Stadium. The star forward is not currently with the club in Asia however, leaving the Irons effectively as they were last season as they look to get the better of the Magpies. Let’s make them for the next five years.Who is going to win college football’s next five national titles? Here are our picks.Predicting College Football’s Next 5 National Champs2018Ohio State brings back a lot of talent on offense and Dwayne Haskins looks like the real deal. The pro-style QB paired with an electric running back in J.K. Dobbins could give OSU the country’s most-exciting offense. The Buckeyes will win their second national title under Urban Meyer.Prediction: Ohio State2019Things are starting to get a little restless in Ann Arbor, with Jim Harbaugh having lost to Ohio State – again. The problem with the Wolverines during the Jim Harbaugh era has been quarterback play. They likely would’ve won last year’s Ohio State game with even slightly above-average QB play.In 2019, Michigan should finally have a really good one in Shea Patterson (assuming he doesn’t leave for the NFL). He was a former top recruit and probably has the best natural ability of any of the QBs on Michigan’s roster. Harbaugh will hopefully have coached him up to a top NFL prospect by 2019.Prediction: Michigan NEXT: The 2020, 2021, 2022 National Champions >>>Pages: Page 1 Page 2

(Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images)Nebraska football hasn’t been a great program over the last few seasons. The Huskers have one of the great traditions in college football though. It wasn’t all that long ago that the program was competing for national championships. Of course, plenty has changed since the halcyon days of Husker football. The team now competes in the Big Ten. It is hard to argue against that move, given the financial and stability advantages afforded by the league. Back in the day, though, Nebraska had it pretty good in the Big Eight/12.Nebraska has a pretty big edge on many of its former conference rivals. Pick Six Previews posted the longest winning streaks against a single opponent in college football history, and Nebraska is very well represented.Nebraska’s decades-long streak against Kansas football is the second-longest of all time. The Huskers beat the Jayhawks every year from 1969 to 2004. Old conference rivalries against schools from the Sunflower State were kind to the Huskers. As Pick Six Previews notes, Nebraska appears in the top 15 two more times. The other two were both 24-game streaks. From 1979-2002, Nebraska recorded 24 straight wins over Missouri. 1974-1999 saw a 24-game win streak against Oklahoma State, though the two teams did not match up during two of those seasons.Only two of Nebraska’s major former conference mates have the historical upper-hand in their series against the Huskers. Longtime rival Oklahoma is 45-38-3 against the Huskers. Texas, which spent less time in the same league, as the Big Eight and SWC did not merge until 1996, is 10-4 in the series.

He was sacked or hurried basically every time he dropped back.Nebraska is now on the verge of an 0-3 start to the Scott Frost era, but keeping Martinez healthy is the key to the rest of the season. We’ll see how the Huskers can respond moving forward.

ARLINGTON, TX – NOVEMBER 05: A Dallas Cowboys helmet at AT&T Stadium on November 5, 2017 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)The Dallas Cowboys are in danger of missing the playoffs yet again under head coach Jason Garrett. Dallas has made the playoffs just twice in Garrett’s time with the team, and he might be out if the team fails to reach the postseason again.A name that has popped up a ton in recent weeks is Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley. The Sooners head coach is a popular NFL head coaching candidate, though Riley announced he has no plans to leave Oklahoma just yet.Despite that admission from Riley, one NFL insider thinks he’d have a tough time turning down the Cowboys if Jerry Jones came calling. Here’s what Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer had to say:I think every team that has an opening will call Lincoln Riley, who really likes the job he’s got at Oklahoma. My feeling is that the Cowboys would probably be the one team, as a native Texan, that Riley would have a hard time saying no to. And if Dallas makes a change, it’s worth mentioning that the Jones family does have a relationship with Riley, who recruited Jerry’s grandson.Riley’s name will pop up for just about every head coaching vacancy in the NFL this season. Will he make the move to the professional level?Stay tuned.[SI]
